The single biggest reason why startups succeed
Bill Gross
From the video, the main point of Bill Gross is that the most significant factor of a company success is timing. He researched five essential factors, they are ideas, team, business model, funding, and timing.
Through these five factors, he analyzed many companies which include successful companies and failed companies.
The outcome surprised him that timing ranked first importance in these five factors, which occupied 42 percent, and the team/execution ranked the second-32 percentage.
Idea "Truth" Outlier, business model, and funding took up 28%, 24% and 14% respectively.
Certainly, it is not easy for company to be succeed, especially big company like Google, YouTube.
Even though Bill believed that the most important factor is timing, it is denial that all of these five factors are essential, they can integrate together to develop a well-functioned company.
For example, if a company have a good idea but they do not implement their ideas well, they may loss the time to be succeed.
When I was a child, my uncle tried to open a restaurant, he found a good place with many potential customers, and also, the rent fee is reasonable.
However, because of these favorable conditions, he thought whatever he made, the restaurant can still be profitable.
Therefore, because food in the restaurant is not delicious, less and less customers wanted to eat there again.
My uncle failed. Setting my uncle as an example is to illustrate that team and executive, or we can say leadership is also meaningful for a company.
In the video, Bill pointed out that even though other factors are important, the timing factor is the most significant. He summarized that execution definitely matters a lot, idea matters a lot, but timing might matter even more.
And the best way to really assess timing is to really look at whether consumers are really ready for what you have to offer them.
He set many examples, one of examples is YouTube. He said that YouTube was perfectly timed with great idea. In fact, YouTube did not even have a business model when it first started.
It wasn't even certain that that would work out. But that was beautifully timed.
That is the crucial reason for You Tube success.
As far as I am concerned, Bill’s suggestion about catching timing is also akind of marketing strategy.
We need to know at this time, what customers need, want and demand. Sometimes, even customers do not know what they need.
For instance, 20 years ago, some people may think smart phone is not what they need, because simple phoneis
enough for them.
However, nowadays we cannot live without smartphone and it is taking a larger part in our life.
Therefore, entrepreneurs need to have a prospective idea and catch the time and opportunities to develop it.
